The department has expertise in the following treatments and procedures:

  • Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and acute phase reactants
  • Rheumatoid factor and Anti-CCP
  • Antinuclear/anticytoplasmic antibodies: screening test, specific autoantibody tests, and LE cell preparation
  • Antineutrophil antibodies: membrane and cytoplasmic
  • Antiphospholipid antibodies including RPR, lupus anticoagulant, and anticardiolipin antibodies
  • Total serum complement activity, complement proteins, histocompatibility markers, cryoglobulins, immunoglobulin levels
  • Synovial fluid analysis: cell count and differential, crystal identification, viscosity, and other special stains/analyses
  • Radiographic imaging and other diagnostic procedures: understand principles and methodology of the following tests;
  • Plain radiographs of bone and joints
  • Bone densitometry
  • Nuclear medicine scintigraphy
  • Ultrasonography and orthography
  • Computed tomography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Electromyography and nerve conduction velocities
  • The department also offers rehabilitation services for those affected by Rheumatism. The following rehabilitation procedures are offered:
  • Exercise: range of motion, strengthening, conditioning, and stretching
  • Rest and splinting
  • Modalities and hydrotherapy: ultrasound,
  • Joint protection and energy conservation techniques
  • Adaptive equipment and assistive devices
  • Job site/home evaluation and adaptation
  • Footwear and orthotics
  • Nutritional issues​
